1) Use the drone size that matches the ship. Yes, heavy's have kill small stuff. I killed 2 Ares with Praetor II drones in a fight once. If I had used smaller drones, I was in a Domi, I could have killed the interceptors and the Hurricane then chewed up the Panther that was also there. Then again I have had Ogre II's one shot a Stealth Bomber Before I could assign them to another target. Like everything it's situational.
2) Yes, depending on the situation. Bigger ships go with bigger drones. Bunch of light stuff go with lighter, kinda covered with the first question.
3) Smart bombs are rare. Limited use and suck a lot of cap. Again it is situational.
If you look at my Sig... The reason it says that is that I use to have more Blue pod kills then red. Smart bombs were the reason. As a Domi pilot I knew the value of shaking those drones, ether they are destroyed or pulled off. Ether one reduces damage and extends my Tank. Down side is I do have a bit of a rep for being a friendly pod killer... 
Still, unless the people you are up against know your in a drone heavy gang you will not see smart bombs. A gun, missile, neut or anything else is usually considered better... then again it's all situational.
4) Sentry's do not move. The advantage is range and instant target switching, since they do not have to fly to the next target. Main use for Sentry's is long ranged attacks. Anti Ewar for me. But if you have lots of webs/scrams on a heavy ship Sentry's can pump out a lot of DPS. Still your more likely to use heavy's in that situation.
When I fly a Domi I always have sentry's. Being able to pop Ewar ships is a valuable thing. Even better is that if your jammed you can assign your drones to an unjammed pilot in your gang and still get the DPS on the Ewar ship.
Oh, last thing. Sentry's are easier to train for and are the only drone type that gets a drone damage rig.
As to which is better... it is situational.
